Tucked-Away Treasures of Orange County

Welcome to Pat Patterson’s Best of California! We’re exploring what to do in lively Buena Park in sunny Orange County. Our adventure starts at Knott’s Berry Farm, where Liza leads us straight into Ghost Town. This charming area bursts with Old West personality and real historic treasures.

Blacksmith at Knott's Beerry Farm

Ghost Town is where the Knott’s story began. Walter Knott, a passionate collector of Western memorabilia, gathered original buildings from abandoned mining towns and brought them here. You can stroll past the working blacksmith shop, peek into an authentic one-room schoolhouse from Kansas, and discover Old Betsy, one of his prized finds. History feels close enough to touch.

Bird Cage Theatre at Knott's Berry Farm

We stop at the legendary Bird Cage Theatre, inspired by the one in Tombstone, and learn how performers—yes, even Steve Martin—got their start on this very stage. Everywhere we go, stories unfold in the most delightful way.

Then comes the food. Knott’s never disappoints. Think boysenberry barbecue wings, savory meatballs on mashed potatoes, boysenberry lemonade, and the iconic purple-battered boysenberry corn dog. And dessert? Heavenly funnel cakes and churros stuffed with warm boysenberry filling. Pure joy on a plate.

Ralph B. Clark regional park Buena Park

Our Buena Park journey continues at Ralph B. Clark Regional Park, an unexpected wonderland of fossils and prehistoric discoveries. Inside the interpretive center, we meet megalodons, giant ground sloths, and whale bones millions of years old. Step outside and enjoy fishing, hiking, playgrounds, and open-air fun. It’s the perfect family adventure spot.

Porto's Bakery

Next, we head to the legendary Porto’s Bakery. This location is massive and always buzzing. We watch cakes being decorated with expert precision and admire the colorful, freshly made fruit tarts—many crafted with berries picked that very morning. It’s a sweet, delicious whirlwind.

Whitaker-Jaynes Estate & Bacon House

We also explore the Whitaker-Jaynes Estate, a beautifully preserved historic home filled with early-1900s charm. It’s like stepping back in time, with every room offering a glimpse of Buena Park’s past.

For a magical twist, we visit The Cauldron Spirits and Brews—a cozy, witch-themed bar with French-inspired bites and whimsical cocktails. Cotton candy cocktails that disappear before your eyes? Absolutely. It’s playful, atmospheric, and unforgettable.

Throughout our trip, we also pause to support the community of Altadena as it rebuilds after devastating fires. Local voices from across California send love, encouragement, and hope—proof that community spirit runs deep.

Buena Park wins you over fast. From thrilling theme parks and historic gems to natural wonders, iconic eats, and imaginative hangouts, this city delivers nonstop delight. I could happily stay forever.

What an amazing journey through one of California’s most fun-filled destinations. Until next time—adventure awaits!
